Carbon Footprint

UPM shares the widespread concern that emissions of greenhouse gases is leading to global climate change. In order to reduce our carbon footprint, UPM's operations are based on sustainably managed forests, efficient use of energy and raw materials, renewable fuels and sustainable recycling and end-of-life.

Our products are made of sustainable and renewable raw material. When growing, the trees bind carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to produce oxygen. If forests are managed sustainably, the use of wood decreases carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The bound carbon dioxide is stored in wood products until the product is burned or decomposed. The longer the product life cycle, more beneficial it will be for the climate.

Our products have a low carbon footprint. The footprint comes mainly from purchased electricity and steam and production of non-wood-based raw materials (e.g. chemicals). Production of plywood and veneer is much less energy intensive compared to other products for the same end use areas. Wood products can also replace fossil fuels in energy production at the end of their life cycle.

ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN THE MANUFACTURE OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

WHAT DO WE DO TO REDUCE WISA CARBON FOOTPRINT?

1.We always strive to improve energy efficiency in all our operations. Renewable fuels, such as the manufacturing by-products bark, chips and sawdust and logging residues, generate most of the energy used in plywood manufacturing. In addition, a noticeable amount of the energy can be recovered from exhaust air and condensation of veneer drying lines. That secondary energy is mostly used for heating logs in soaking basins before the peeling process begins.

2.We practice sustainable forestry in order to promote carbon uptake by the forests. Sustainable forest management can increase carbon storage in the forest through activities such as thinning, to promote tree growth.

3.We use wood raw material efficiently by developing our production processes as well as the competence of our employees, so we do not waste any renewable materials.
