UPM recognises and utilises all credible forest certification schemes, including the two major international ones - PEFC and FSC. As a global industry leader, UPM actively promotes an increase in the use of certified wood worldwide and all of UPM's own forests are certified.
The chain-of-custody model in UPM meets the requirements of both the PEFC and FSC standards and confirms the sustainable and legal origin of all wood used by the company.
UPM together with the WWF and Det Norske Veritas conducted parallel field-testing of five forest certification schemes in 2004. The comparison showed that all the schemes promote sustainable forest management, with a slightly different emphasis.
