Sortimo and UPM Plywood: A partnership for excellence in transport solutions

Sortimo International GmbH, world´s leading manufacturer of van racking systems and mobile transport solutions, has established a strong and collaborative partnership with UPM Plywood. This strategic alliance enables Sortimo to deliver highly customized and durable solutions to their customers.

Sortimo International GmbH is the leading manufacturer of van racking system and mobile transport solutions. Based in Zusmarshausen, Bavaria, Sortimo has presence in 35 countries and 1,300 employees worldwide.

“We focus on providing high-quality products, services, and tailored solutions for load securing to meet customers' individual requirements and take pride in being able to offer customized solutions for customers ranging from large fleets to individual tradesmen”, Head of Strategic Procurement at Sortimo, Michael Unger, says.

Sortimo is committed to using only the finest materials in its manufacturing process, including WISA® plywood. UPM Plywood supplies Sortimo with premium birch plywood that balances strength, weight, and density perfectly. This choice of material ensures that Sortimo's products surpass industry standards in terms of durability and structural integrity.

“One could say that plywood forms the foundation for our products. Our core product, shelving systems, are always mounted on a floor panel made of high-reliability and durable material to ensure that in case of a crash, our product is robust enough to keep the driver and passengers safe. This is one of the reasons we use plywood from UPM.”

Matching colour, steady supply

Plywood used by Sortimo must be both durable and aesthetically pleasing, according to Unger. This is because the company's base plates are typically made from multiple plates, and the modular design requires that the plywood plates match in colour. To tackle the challenge, Sortimo uses WISA-Hexa Grey in their racking systems.

“The colour we use is not standardized, making it challenging to match if we were to combine plywood from different manufacturers. By exclusively using WISA plywood, we ensure superior colour matching, which is a great benefit for us."

Thirdly, Unger emphasizes the importance of UPM Plywood's reliable supply chain, which has helped Sortimo weather difficult times.

“UPM Plywood offers brilliant service that has helped us pull through difficult times such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, things that could have seriously disrupted our supply chain. This is why quality service is equally important to the quality of the plywood.”

Fourthly, Sortimo can meet the specific dimensions and robustness requirements for its diverse range of transport solutions by using UPM Plywood's customized solutions. This gives Sortimo a competitive edge in the market.

“Folks at UPM Plywood not only provide us with quality plywood but also seek ways to assist us in fulfilling our customers' wishes and supporting our growth. This collaborative communication fosters a sense of shared goals between our organizations”, Unger concludes.
