Beyond laboratory testing – WISA plywood’s performance is proven in demanding real-life conditions

WISA® plywood is thoroughly tested in the laboratory. Final performance and functionality can also be verified under field conditions, directly in customers’ everyday use.

All UPM Plywood’s WISA products undergo strict testing during product development and manufacturing. Around 80 different tests are conducted, some of which are tailored to simulate transportation industry conditions. These tests ensure the product’s wear resistance and structural strength.

Laboratory testing includes, for example, a wheel load test simulating forklift use and a rolling test with a 300 kg load and a steel wheel. Before physical testing, UPM’s extensive test data can be used for computer simulations. The test results provide accurate and comparable data, for example, when evaluating the durability of trailer flooring. Performance can be further analyzed through field testing.

“The laboratory conditions are standardized, but field testing provides valuable information about actual use. It is important to test products together with customers in real end-use conditions, both during development and when they are already in production – so that we can continue developing our plywood products,” says UPM’s Product Manager Harri Nieminen

User experience confirms the laboratory results of WISA®-TopGrip

One example of practical testing is WISA®-TopGrip, which was installed in the trailers of two transport operators for trial use in summer 2024. The product offers a fixed, durable anti-slip surface for vehicle floors, replacing loose friction mats.

During the testing period, the trailers transported loads such as sawn timber, pulp and paper, all of which place significant strain on floor structures. After one year, the condition of the panels was reviewed together with the transport operators.

”The results were very positive. User feedback confirmed that the product’s grip and wear resistance withstand demanding use. According to the users, its sound-muffling properties also enhanced comfort and usability,” says Nieminen.

Quality assurance continues throughout the product lifecycle

Testing is not a separate phase of product development – it strengthens customer understanding, technical expertise and market insight. Field tests, customer  trials and ongoing collaboration with manufacturers ensure that every WISA product meets both functional requirements and relevant standards.

“UPM is a frontrunner in research and development in the industry. Our expertise in plywood strength and our testing capabilities are among the best in the world,” says Nieminen.

“Our job is to make sure our products work and help make our customers’ everyday operations easier – also in future potential applications,” Nieminen concludes.
