Behind the scenes: Kasperi Tirronen improves production processes for reliable WISA plywood deliveries

In his role as production manager, Kasperi Tirronen influences both the production of UPM Pellos 3 plywood mill’s production and the staff. A holistic approach to process improvement increases production efficiency as well as delivery reliability and quality of WISA plywood.

"Digital tools, data collection and the development of the staff’s operational capabilities improve the mill's predictability and delivery reliability," Kasperi notes.

Situated in Mikkeli by Lake Saimaa, UPM Pellos is Europe's largest softwood plywood mill, producing various WISA spruce plywood products. The wood raw material is sourced from sustainably managed nearby forests, and WISA plywood products are shipped from Pellos to construction projects worldwide.

Kasperi’s work involves not only the development of the mill and its processes in the long run but also daily problem-solving in cooperation with others in the organisation. With a coaching approach, he acts as the supervisor for five people and their approximately 140 subordinates. Projects related to production and safety consume a great deal of his working time, which in turn enhances product delivery reliability and quality.

A new teamwork model has for example increased the workers' responsibility and possibility to make decisions related to their work. A shared system has also improved the flow of information.

"Employees have had good experiences with the new responsibilities, and problem-solving has become faster."

Quality and delivery reliability constantly improved

Kasperi has continuously gotten new tasks that allow him to utilise his strengths. He started as a summer worker and conducted both his internships and thesis for UPM Plywood while studying Production Engineering at LUT University in Lappeenranta. He also worked as a project engineer, among other roles. The production manager position conveniently opened up at the time of his graduation in 2022.

"I appreciate the diverse tasks, the responsibility and freedom. When I notice challenges on the horizon, I can decide which areas we should develop to meet them," answers Kasperi when asked why he is satisfied working with the company.

"In a factory environment, there are many variables that call for constant stabilisation and development. I strive to create the conditions and capabilities we need to ensure that we together can guarantee the quality and reliable delivery of WISA plywood in all situations."
