Wear-resistant flooring for vehicles – WISA®-Truck Plus, WISA®-Trans Mk2 and WISA®-Wire

Excellent wear resistance is a must for vehicle flooring. WISA plywood products offer excellent solutions for different applications: WISA-Truck Plus for super heavy-duty, WISA-Trans Mk2 for heavy-duty and WISA-Wire for basic use.

In the transport industry, wear resistance is one of the most important features of a vehicle’s floor. The floor is stressed by roller cages, pallet trucks and forklifts, both loaded and unloaded, rolling across it on rubber, plastic or even metal wheels, sometimes several times a day.

WISA flooring solutions have been designed and developed for different applications in cooperation with customers.

“The most economically sustainable solution considers the service life of the floor. Our job is to help the customer find the best solution for their needs,” says Harri Nieminen, Product Manager at UPM Plywood, responsible for coated birch products.

All WISA plywood products developed for heavy-duty vehicle floors are made of layered birch plywood glued together and designed to meet the requirements of each application. Different coatings can be applied to modify the plywood’s properties, such as wear resistance. This article covers three proven options: WISA®-Truck Plus, WISA®-Trans Mk2 and WISA®-Wire.

WISA®-Truck Plus – for daily super heavy-duty use

WISA-Truck Plus is designed for extreme, heavy-duty delivery applications where cargo must be loaded and unloaded many times per day. The thick, wear-resistant coating can bear the stress of moving heavy trolleys and is easy to clean.

WISA-Truck Plus is the only plywood flooring on the market that can last for up to 200,000 (± 35%) movements in the rolling test.

“WISA-Truck Plus flooring pays for itself because the floor will last for the full life cycle of the trailer,” concludes Nieminen.

WISA-Truck Plus is also useful for the growing trend of trailer refurbishing. On average, trailers have a service life of seven to ten years. According to industry calculations, the CO2 emissions of refurbishing a trailer are only a fifth of the emissions produced by the construction of a new trailer.

“Thanks to its high wear resistance and structural strength, WISA-Truck Plus plywood flooring may well remain usable even when the rest of the trailer needs refurbishing,” says Nieminen. WISA-Truck Plus, together with WISA-Trans Mk2, represents the pinnacle of UPM Plywood’s internal customer-oriented product development. These products embody the skills and knowledge gained from decades of practical experience.

WISA®-Trans Mk2 – highly resistant to moisture and wear

WISA-Trans Mk2 is suitable for demanding applications such as trailer flooring. It has been a favorite of vehicle manufacturers for decades because of its durability and long-lasting, hard-wearing coating. The non-slip slate-style texture improves safety and helps buyers identify genuine WISA-Trans Mk2 flooring.

“Like WISA-Truck Plus, WISA-Trans Mk2 is highly resistant to not only wear but also humidity. WISA-Trans Mk2 is easy to clean and makes for impressive surfaces.”

WISA®-Wire – reliable basic plywood vehicle flooring

WISA-Wire is your familiar and functional flooring option with a non-slip surface texture, suitable for lighter applications such as vans and trucks. It is a cost-effective option for floors not subject to constant heavy mechanical stress. WISA-Wire is not only suitable for vehicles, but also industrial and construction applications such as warehouse floors, loading bays and scaffolding.

Trustworthy testing for demanding applications

UPM uses modified ISO, SS and SFS standards for its rolling and wheel load testing. The rolling test uses steel wheels and 300 kilogram loads, an accurate simulation of demanding applications.

“We openly discuss product testing with our customers. Our extensive testing history and data help to detect anomalies quickly,” says Nieminen.

The superb strength-to-weight ratio of WISA plywood promotes energy efficiency by lowering the overall weight of the transport unit. WISA flooring solutions combine the load-bearing structure with a hard-wearing surface, which saves on materials and labor by avoiding the need to replace the surface. The environmental product declaration (EPD) or life cycle analysis (LCA) and declaration of performance (DoP), among other documentation, are available for WISA products. All documentation is published on the WISA Plywood website.
